The Clinico-Statistical Evaluations on Hearing Impariment in Diabetes Mellitus Patients and Comparison with Normal Group

Abstract
Impairment of hearing in patients with diabetes mellitus is characterized by slowly progressive, bilateral and symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss. Pathogenesis of this impairment of hearing in diabetics is not fully understood. There are some
controversial reports denying not only the significance of the se facts but also the occurrence of the hearing loss itself in diabetics.
We evaluated the threshold of hearing in 19 diabetics with or without peripheral neuropathy with audiometry and the results were compared with those from a group of normal. Age-matched subjects. The over-all incidrence of hearing loss occured in
about
68% of all diabetics, and all(100%) cases in the sub-group having peripheral neuropathy. The incidence of hearing impaiment is higher in group of middle and older age at range of high frequencies over 3,000 Hz, We found out the correlation
between
the
inner-ear pathology and the diabetic complications as indicated by the peripheral neuropathy of the auditory nerve.
The authors thought that the etiology of hearing impairment in diabetes patients seemed to be concerned with multiple factors. Further work is required in both normal and diabetes patients.
